Unicorn!Wizard!England x Wizard!Reader My Secret Unicorn
"Hey Arthur! How's it going?" you said, poking your head through the doorway to a darkly lit dorm room, the only light source being one of the few lamps. You took a few steps inside and looked for the British man.
Arthur Kirkland was sitting at his desk scrawling notes at his desk, beakers, jars, and test tubes filled with multicolored potions covered the top of it. The large black hat on his head shifted with him when the blonde turned to his guest and gasped.
Grabbing his journals and clutching them to his chest, startled, he said "O-oh, hello ____!"
He resembled a deer in headlights, but he managed a smile that looked more like a grimace, "Didn't hear you come in! Talk about sneaky! I say, maybe you were a ninja in a past life."
You had taken a seat on his bed and crossed your legs. You stroked your small bag that you brought everywhere with you, the black velvet felt soft against your skin.
You looked up at the guy, whose leg began to twitch, and arched an eyebrow, "Arthur, are you okay? You seem kinda nervous. Is something wrong?"
"No, everything's fine! I'm fine! In fact, I'm better than fine. How are you?"
He was acting pretty suspicious, but you opted to play along, "I'm okay…just wanted to talk and see when you wanted to meet up so we can work on our strategy for the Hópvinna Project that Professor Bondevik mentioned in class."
Arthur didn't seem to hear you, he was engrossed in his journal again. But he did keep an eye on you to make sure you didn't try to look over his shoulder.
You pointed to the objects in his arms, "what are those papers you have there? Are you working on a new spell?"
His eyes widen slightly, but was replaced with an anxious smile, "Haha, what are you talking about, ____? A new spell? We aren't supposed to attempt to come up with more than one new spell or curse a week. And, as you know, I just invented the 'Curse of British Food and Bad Tea in Professor Braginski's class on last week.'"
"…Right…"
You shuddered at the memory. Arthur had asked you to be his guinea pig in the experiment. You had stomach pains every day since then.
"Anyway," Arthur seemed to have composed himself, "you came here to…ah yes, our meeting…um, how does tomorrow after dinner, so around 7:30pm?"
You thought for a moment, "sure…hey, by the way-"
The door swung open, "Hey Arty, are you done with my-" the man who spoke paused when he saw you sitting on Arthur's bed, "Ah, hello, ____! How have ya been, Lassie?"
You both turned to the new visitor to the Kirkland Dorm, Allistor Kirkland. His tall frame filled the doorway.
"Oh, hi Scottie," you greeted him.
He walked into the room and winked at you. You thought he was pretty cool, but he always smelled like cigarette smoke, which dropped his level of coolness by at least a quarter. You winced and tried not to gag.
He strode up to Arthur, who had turned away to keep working in his notes, and smirked, "hey, Little Arty…" He bent a little so he was eye level with the Brit, "what? Not going to greet Big Brother?"
Allistor was Arthur's older brother, he was raised in Scotland by their grandfather. He loved to razz on his younger brother, a lot.
Arthur narrowed his eyebrows and scowled at the nickname, he resumed his task, "I see you every day, unfortunately, I see no need to greet you every time you stalk on in through a door." With that, he turned back to his work.
"You shouldn't talk to Big Brother that way, brother dearest," Allistor said with feigned sweetness, his hand glowed orange as he used his power to force Arthur to look at him, "especially since I know your secret."
Arthur glared dagger at his brother and raised his right hand, the green magic beginning to glow from it. But he saw you out of the corner of his eye, gazing upon the tense situation.
He lowered his now unglowing hand and shook his brother off. He walked over to you and gently took hold of your shoulders and led you towards the door and away from Scottie.
"I'm sorry about him, but I'll see you in class tomorrow, okay?" he managed a smile.
"See you later, ____!" Allistor called with a wave. Arthur glared at his brother over his shoulder.
"Bye," you waved a quick bye to the Scotsman before Arthur slammed the door shut and you heard muffled shouts and mocking laughs.
You were going to leave, but you cast a worried glance back at the Kirkland Dorm.
Seriously, those journals didn't look like any homework from Bondevik's "Potions are fun" class, Braginski's "Cursing Your Enemies, Da~" class, or Väinämöinen's Magic 101 class. And it didn't look like a spell from where you were sitting.
And what was this "secret" Scottie mentioned?
'What are they hiding?' You hadn't known Arthur for that long, so he would obviously have his secrets. But that made you want to find out even more now.
"I WILL find out what you're hiding, Kirkland Brothers, specifically you, Arthur. You can count on that," you murmured to yourself. With that determined thought in mind you set off for your dorm room.
You, the Kirkland clan, and the whole student body lived in the dorms of Gakuen Academy, along with its faculty. It was a school open only to magical creatures. You know, vamps, werewolves, demons, angels, etc.
Since you were a wizard, all your classes were about all things magic, like potion mixing, curses, and learning when to use and how to control your magic.
Especially since the world knew nothing of the world of magic, good or bad, other than those kids' shows on the TV or the internet.
The dorms were located on both sides of the school, separated based on gender. The rules were you're allowed to visit the male dorms, but you couldn't room with them or be in the male dorms past curfew, which was 11pm. The same went for the guys regarding the female dorms.
When you came to your door, you checked your robe pocket for your velvet bag where you kept all of your important items, including your key, 'man, why do they make us wear these huge robes? Yeah, they're cool and add to the magical school for magic creatures, but these pockets are big enough to fit Mary Poppins and that bottomless travel bag of hers' you thought.
After shuffling through five small bottles of health potions and eye of newt along with your spell book that grows and shrinks as needed, among other things, you checked the other pocket. No luck.
Of course, the reason the school required actual keys instead of just letting you poof your way into your room was that Headmaster Kisslinger didn't want his student body to rely on magic all of the time, especially since it was risky in the human world.
So you'd have to know how to do things without it. It was a good idea, but kinda crappy when you couldn't fine your key.
Then you gasped, you had set your velvet bag on Arthur's bed when you sat down.
"That's where it is!" you were about to say the spell that poofs you to wherever you want to go.
But you remembered that you were on your last day of magic suspension for accidentally cursing Professor Braginski when he was lecturing about using curses to keep "creepy, younger sisters that are obsessed with you" away.
You said the spell wrong and brought the professor's younger sister to the classroom and she proceeded to chase him until the Headmaster came in and poofed her out of there.
That was the reason you now had to hoof it back to Arthur's room. During the return trip, you thought back to how you and Arthur met.
The first day you attended Gakuen Academy, you were actually pretty nervous. You could usually handle yourself well enough to endure any shock, but the first day of school always got you.
First period was Magic 101 and being the new kid, they had to put you through the embarrassing age old ritual of introducing yourself in front of the class. Once you got through that, he told you to take a seat, but all of the desks were full.
Professor Väinämöinen apologized and transformed all of the desks into tables that could accommodate two students. He asked you to sit with Kirkland in the back.
You walked to the back and took your seat. You tried to pay attention to the lesson, but you felt the boy next to you watching you.
You turned to him and asked, "yes?"
"You're real pretty," the guy took your hand, "would ye like to be my girlfriend?"
'Wow, not even five minutes at this school and this happens,' you thought, bemused.
"Um, that's very flattering…uh," you didn't even know this guy's name.
"Kirkland. Allistor Kirkland," he kissed your hand, which you pulled away, "friends call me 'Scottie.'"
You could see how they would give him that nickname, it was easy to tell from his Scottish accent, "Well, Scottie, it's sweet of you to ask but-"
"Would you just leave her alone, Allistor," a voice with a British accent hissed.
You and Allistor turned to the new voice. A blonde boy with two bushy eyebrows was glaring at the redheaded Allistor from the table to your right.
"Jealous much, Arthur?" Allistor smirked beside you, "I bet you wish ye had a pretty lass talkin' to you."
Arthur blushed, but managed a scowl, "all I'm saying is that not every girl in Gakuen Academy wants to go out with you, you know."
"I'd don't believe I was asking ye, little brother. I was asking the lady," he returned his attention back to you, "so, how bout it?"
"Thanks for the offer, really, but I have to refuse."
Allistor looked puzzled and his thinner eyebrows were knit close together .
"I'm sorry, but I think I should try to focus on school first. This is my first year, after all. But I'd love it if we could start off as friends," you smiled, hoping he'd take your offer of friendship.
Allistor scratched the back of his head and smiled sheepishly, "…yeah, sure…"
Your smiled widened and his eyes softened. He ruffled your hair and turned back to the lesson.
You glanced over to the boy who helped you, he watched you with dark green eyes that resembled a shaded forest. You cupped your left hand around your mouth and mouthed, 'thank you.'
Either Arthur could actually read lips or he thought you were making funny faces, either way, he grinned and gave you a thumbs up.
The rest of the class went without a hitch, as did Professor Braginski's class. You were pleasantly surprised that you had Potion Mixing class with Arthur.
With a stoic look, Professor Bondevik spent part of the class talking about The Hópvinna Project.
The Hópvinna Project was a competition Gakuen Academy held annually. All students were required to compete and were paired up with a partner during one of their classes.
Everyone always looked forward to it, mainly because the prize was an upgrade on your magic and two gift certificates to HOCUS POCUS, the best store in the entire magic realm.
It had everything any magical creature could desire. And as a bonus, the winning duo would receive privet lessons from the Headmaster himself.
And it was all anyone was talking about nowadays. Even you were excited, Arthur was a wonderful wizard. One could even say he was a prodigy.
But that wasn't the reason you asked him to be your partner. You couldn't put your finger on it, but there was something about him. His gutsy attitude, the way he always spoke his mind, his smarts and wit, his good looks, even those eyebrows.
When it came down to it, you had the hots for Arthur Kirkland.
You had come to terms with that early on, so now you used every opportunity to try to look cool in front of him. But that's when he started acting strangely, even for a wizard.
When Prof. Bondevik briefly described the competition, he brought up partner selection. Everyone was allowed to choose their partner.
A few guys from class asked you to partner up with them, but you gently turned them down. You saw Arthur sitting in the corner, pouring over one of his books.
You walked over to him. Smiling, you said, "Hey, Arthur."
He glanced up, looking a bit taken aback, "oh, hello ____."
"Thanks again for earlier."
"It was no trouble. My older brother needs to understand he can't always get what he wants. And as a gentleman, I couldn't let you suffer his ghastly attempts of trying to woo a woman."
You chuckled, leaning back on an empty desk, "Heh…well, I was actually wondering…uh…I know we've just met and all, but would you…do you want to be…"
'Shoot, I'm not that great at these kind of things,' you cursed in your mind.
"Hold on, are you asking if I'd be your-"
"Partner for The Hópvinna Project, yes," you sighed, glad he knew what you were talking about.
Arthur blushed, "the competition?...Oh yes, of course that's what you meant…sure, I'd love to be partners."
"Really?!"Shoot, that sounded too eager, but it didn't matter, "Thank you."
"No, thank you," you both laughed.
As your memory finished up, you were coming up to his door. You pressed your ear to it, listening for the argument that had been taking place when you left. Thankfully, it seemed to have been resolved or at least dropped for now.
You were going to knock, but for some reason, you tried the doorknob first. It was unlocked, surprisingly.
You peeked around the door and saw Arthur trying on different hats, mumbling about how none of them looked right. Some of them were so large and goofy-looking you had to cover your mouth to stifle your laughter.
In between switching from the purple top hat to a bright green one you saw a something underneath it. You couldn't catch what it was, so you snuck up behind Arthur, out of the mirror's reflection and reached for the hat.
Unfortunately, Arthur saw you and jerked away, smashing the hat harder onto his head and glared, "Hey! ___! What are you doing back here?"
You kept reaching for it, "Arthur, what was that? I saw something!"
After struggling with the Brit, you accidently knocked Arthur off balanced, sending you both to the ground. Arthur's big hat had fallen off and you gasped. Not because you were injured, but because the thing on top of his head.
There was a big golden horn sticking out of his blonde hair.
When he realized what happened he desperately tried to cover it with his hands and began searching for his hat on the ground.
You touched his hands and he froze. You gently pulled them away and stared at the spike.
You shifted into a kneeling position, making you face-to-face with it. However, upon closer inspection, it wasn't really a spike. The pointed edge had been broken off a couple inches from where it would have been.
You wondered happened to it while you gazed in awe, 'how…?'
For nearly all of the time that you had known Arthur Kirkland, he never took his hat off in a room- he took the teachers at school and everyone else that it was a necessity for some obscure medical condition he contracted in Great Britain.
Arthur blushed at the close proximity and because your chest was at eye level.
You were compelled to reach out and touch it, but as soon as your fingers made contact, Arthur shrieked and scooted back to the wall behind him, "Don't Touch IT!!!!" His face was fire engine red.
"It's growing out of your head, "you said, more of a statement than a question.
Arthur tried to explain the situation, without revealing any more than he needed to, "Yes. Well, you see...um..."
"...how did this happen?"
Arthur glanced around for any kind of excuse, but finding none, he sighed, "I was trying to get back at Allistor."
"He always makes fun of me and I thought if I could come up with an amazing new spell, then I'd get everyone's praise and approval. If you haven't noticed, I'm not exactly Mr. Popularity like him. Well, anyway, my calculations were a bit off and as you can see it kinda backfired."
You did recall no one besides you asking Arthur to be partners. In fact, some cruel kids said some nasty things about him when he wasn't around. You thought he never knew because you always tried to cease the rumors and mockery before it started each time.
"Look, you can't tell anyone, please," Arthur pleaded.
"..."
"People...already make fun of me for being different, I don't need to give them anything else to use against me," his eyes turned hard and he stared at the ground.
"I won't tell..."
He whipped his head up, his mop of blonde hair following after. His emerald eyes looked into your (color) eyes, searching them- seeing nothing but honesty in them.
"You won't? Thank you."
"Yeah, no one should endure being bullied, I should know..." painful memories flashed in your mind. You shook your head, willing them away. That was not a time you wanted to waste time reliving.
"Seems like we aren't in the same positions but are on similar grounds."
You nodded, "yes."
"Well, I don't know why anyone would pick on someone with such a pretty face like yours~"
You tinged pink and smirked at him, "Well, I don't know why anyone would pick on you either. I think you look handsome with or without a unicorn horn on your head."
It was Arthur's time to blush.
"You know," you walked to his bed, your black bag still there, "this is all I came back for. But I'm glad I got to find out your secret, it was really bothering me." You walked to his desk and leaned against it.
"What was?"
"That you were keeping it from me even though Allistor knows."
Arthur sat on the bed, hands in his lap, "psh, Allistor…He doesn't know why it happened but he's certainly using it to his advantage."
You were looking at the stuff on his desk, "What do you-"
Arthur, confused as to why you stopped mid-sentence, looked at you and gasped. You were holding the papers he was clinging to before.
"This is homework for an advanced Magic 303, why do you have it Arthur? You are way smart, but you don't even take this class…and why does it have Allistor's name on it?"
"I-I'm studying up for when we have to t-take it," he stuttered, "now can I have it back?" He reached for the pages but you held it behind your back.
You shook your head, "But I've read your research paper on the effects of potions of magical animals, this is your handwriting," you looked at him, "Arthur?"
Arthur looked down, embarrassed.
"…Is Allistor blackmailing you to do his homework so he'll keep your secret?"
Arthur didn't answer for a couple of minutes, but finally he sighed and nodded, "he said he'd tell the whole school and that he'd tell Professor Bondevik that I took the jar of Wicked Tongues from his potion cabinet because I needed it for my spell. I don't want to get into trouble."
You put your hand on his shoulder, "but you can't let him do this to you, it's not right. Plus, you only wanted to borrow it, right? I'm sure you were going to return it."
"I was, but I don't think he'd going to believe that."
"But we can tell him and I'm sure he'll help you with the horn!"
"'We?' You mean you'd come with me?"
You nodded, "Of course, I won't let my poor little Iggy suffer this alone," you said in a teasing tone. In your spare time, you had come up with your own nickname for him.
Arthur's cheeks turned pink and he murmured, "……'your Iggy…?'"
"Hm?" you didn't hear him, "Anyway, let's go now, I think the Professor is still in his office." You locked hands with the handsome wizard and led him there.
Before you could knock on the door it opened with a dark blue glow around it, you and Arthur peered inside in time to see Professor Lukas Bondevik bring his glowing hand down, "Come in."
Arthur let you walk in first the followed until you both stood in front of the huge cheery wood desk.
The Professor's icy blue stare bore into your souls, he looked at Arthur and said, "remove the hat."
Arthur brought his hands to the edge of his hat and let them linger as he hesitated. He mustered up the courage and yanked it off, revealing the abnormal limb sprouting from his noggin.
Prof. Bondevik stared at it then looked into Arthur's eyes, "you used the Wicked Tongues Potion, didn't you?"
Arthur nodded, meekly. The Professor put a pale hand to his temple, "Arthur, you shouldn't take things without asking, I expect more from you," he soft voice speaking firmly.
Arthur stood there, bracing for punishment. He didn't realize that his mind was being read to find out what happened, his head had a blue aura around it.
When the Professor had seen enough to assess the situation, his softened a little, "ah, I understand. Arthur Kirkland, I will not punish you this time, but I expect better from you next time."
You squeezed Arthur's hand and smiled at him, he sighed, very relieved.
"Now the issue remains, what to do about that horn…" The Professor's monotone voice was the loudest thing in the room.
Y U NO WORK?!
